SWISS AIR SHOW MEN IN NEGATIVE LIGHT by GRAHAM SLIGHT*

Recently I have been a regular traveller on Swiss Air.

I am seemingly one of the few to watch the safety videos but got increasingly annoyed with the Swiss Air one for its glaringly obvious anti-male bias.

It features a cartoon family of man, mother and daughter who skips merrily down the massively wide aisles of a similarly cartoon aircraft. In this video it is the man who is seen sneaking off to the aircraft toilet for a smoke and setting off the alarm despite there now being more women smokers than men in the UK.

To make matters worse, there is an evacuation of the aircraft and the man is shown abandoning the concept of women and children first and has exited the aircraft on his own leaving his wife to carry the daughter down the escape slide to safety. It is only the women who is shown caring about the child’s safety by putting on the child’s oxygen mask and life jacket. When they evacuate into the water once again the daughter is carried by the mother down the slide.

Then to cap it all the mother is shown in one aisle seat with her daughter in the middle seat with the man set apart from them as though on the other side of the aisle as if not part of the family.

Wow, pretty impressive sexism there.

However, to be fair, actions speak far louder than words.

If the airline was to have an "all men are paedophiles" seating policy liek BA, Qantas, Air NZ etc then that's a million times worse, even if it is less obvious to your average passenger.
