Thanks again for your analysis, John.

But put this into its electoral perspective. The Lib Dems are extremely unlikely to win the election outright; the best they can hope for is to hold the balance of power in a hung parliament - a result that is looking very likely right now.

In which case, it is a pretty solid bet that they will do what they have always done in similar situations: cosy up with Labour and keep them in power - at a price, of course, which will be thrashed out in secret behind closed doors and away from the eyes and ears of the electorate. All of which will mean that any truly "liberal" ideas will be washed away and will never become government policy. Can you imagine Harriet (or her feminist successor(s) in power, whoever that may be) allowing any concept of equal parenting to see the light of day?

I think reality has done a bit of debunking of Paul's prediction there.

Ah, hindsight --- always crushes wrong predictions in its path.

Anyone who managed to predict Nick Clegg's decision to team up with the Tories is either a sage or an idiot.
