The commentary from women but the myths of the gender pay gap are starting to come thick and fast.
This article (link) by Vicki Woods in The Daily Telegraph entitled "The pay gap is down to babies, not sexism" should be sent to all the usual suspects who believe it is.
A previous article appeared only last month (link).
A whole series of research reports for the old Equal Opportunities Commission carefully show exactly that, the "maternity gap". Perhaps it should be repeated all over the place the "maternity gap" is far more accurate esp. at a time when many women choose not to have children and earn more than men. Maternity also explains the higher earnings of men with children too, trying to fill the "materinty gap". This is how real life works outside the cosseted London elite.

The Equal Opportinites Commission funded a series of large scale research projects. All these demonstrated the authors point. Hence the Commission's championing of flexible working for women and men. The other difference was in the choice of job with women choosing to work in flexible industries and much more likely to be empoyed by the public sector ( which tends to be more open to flexible working). Unsurprisingly the workers working the longest hours ( paid and unpaid) were the fathers of young children, the highest earners of "never married" men and women were women. Prior to child bearing the pay difference is very small and accounted for by the different choices of industry and employer. To their credit the EOC published there reports on their website. All this work from the last few years of the EOC deserves to be better known as it really does cut through the anecdotal approach to much of this debate.

I wonder why I,m not surprised that Harriet still bangs on about the pay gap in her new "Equalities" Bill. Despite the Feminist research concluding as above.
