A SHARD OF LIGHT ONTO THE GENDER PAY GAP

Passing through London a week ago, I went pass the Shard building which looks amazing and it is is still not finished. As I looked up, I could still see some cranes perched at the very top working way. As Wikipedia said:

"The Shard's steel structure was topped out on 30 March 2012, when its 66-metre (217 ft), 500-tonne spire was winched into place. The steel structure thus reached a height of 308.5 metres (1,012 ft). The final 516 panes of glass were added shortly after, topping the tower out at its full height of 309.6 metres (1,016 ft)."

I have no evidence but I would bet my house on it, that those crane-drivers were men. I bet my house becauseif they were women it would be in the papers. That would be no problem per se and there is no problem with women being crane drivers but the Shard crane drivers show why there is a gender pay gap (for women over 30 only of remember).

Those men risking life and limb to be prepared to be 1,000 ft up a building will be rightly paid a lot of money (well I hope they are). A lot of money they probably bring home to their wife and kids (including daughters) so both men and women in that family unit benefit.

But the BBC, Guardian, Fawcett Society, the three main political parties and all those other groups instead of recognising that some men get paid well becuase of the dangerous jobs and anti-social hours many of them endure - they believe the gender pay gap is down to discrimination in the workplace.

This is the terrible lie repeated over and over again, without a shred of evidence, that says men get paid more than women for doing the same job, at the same company, with the same skill, the same experience and the same contribution to the bottom line. It is a terrible lie because it deminses men and in particular "male bosses" and is a ruse to claim special treatment for women over men - although this damages female partners, daughters, sisters and mothers of men.

Whenever you read about the coming new rules about the gender pay gap or hear anybody at work talking about it - mention the Shard crane drivers - and ask them how many women would do that job and ask them why those men who do it should not be paid well.

Editors note- There were a few articles on the Gender Pay Gap and some were truly awful. Anna Bird in the Guardian  was pretty well shot down by many in the comments section and again more and more people are having the balls to challenge this nonsense.

This poor article in the Standard repeats this myth "in the US, women’s salaries are around 77 per cent of men’s when they do similar jobs."

   

GOVE'S PLANS GIVE HOPE TO FUTURE GENERATIONS OF BOYS

Thank you to all those who have shown for the site over the past week - it is appreciated.

Appreciation should also go to Michael Gove, the Education Secretary, who today following a leak to the Daily Mail, is putting forward a plan to move back to the O-level system. Commentators including us here (1 and 2) have said the move from exam-based O-levels to course-based GCSE's has greatly damaged the education of boys for the last 25 years. It has led to a gender education gap of about seven years which is now feeding through into a gender pay gap for young men.

There of course is the usual groundswell of opinion against the plans, and often the more people oppose something the better it probably is as the vested interests wade in.

They are only plans and suggestions at this stage and nothing is agreed but a change back would save future generations of boys from the fate the current and recent past generations of boys have had in having an exam system that is weighted against them.

PIVOTAL WEEK FOR FATHERS

It seems a pivotal week for Father's with Father's Day being widely celebrated and seems to be more so each year combined with the news earlier this week that the government has launched a green paper on ensurig there is parental involvement with children for mothers and fathers if they separate.

Father's Day itself has this year passed without inane comments from Cameron and his ilk like last year. Throughout the week, it was clear that there were more supplements about celebrating Father's Day, articles about how important fathers are as well articles that raising the continuing question about those dads who today will be sorely missing their children because of the maliciousness of the mothers and CAFCASS.

While some may critcise some of the weekly supplements about 'what to buy dad' because they solely driven by profit - well, frankly who cares? If magazines and retailers think the children of father's want to celebrate the day by buying a gift for their dad then it doesn't matter because the by-product is the raising of the profile of the day itself and the importance of fathers.

The day itself acts as a pivot to leverage coverage about fatherhood and there have been a number of great examples (see below). With the day being in June and International Men's Day in November it gives the opportunity to have two days a year which put men, boys and fathers in the spotlight. It would be fantastic if International Men's Day received the same coverage.

The Fatherhood Institute call for father's names to be on all birth certficates

On the issue of the Green paper issued this week - there has been some positivity and some negativity from those in the men and boys sector. The main issues were around whether it was shared parenting or not and also the strength of the pledge to deal with mothers (and some fathers) who disgracefully breach contacts orders and continually get away with it. Tim Loughton spells out the situation in a letter in The Times and was robust in the BBC

Families Need Fathers were positive as were the Fatherhood Institute and the Centre for Seperated Families. Fathers4Justice said it was the worst Father's Day card ever and Janice Atkinson-Small in the Mail is very unhappy. 

I have not looked through it all, but happy for any views to be shared here but there seems to be three non-feminist groups in favour.

PMS - PUNISH MEN SEVERELY

I saw a girl (circa 21) today with a badge on her hat with the words "PMS - Punish Men Severely".

Looking on the web, there seems lots of these products available. They have obviously replaced the 'men are stupid, throw rocks at them' tshirts/mugs.

I wonder what the militant feminists who laugh at this would think if the genders were reversed and also it is just another way of demeaning men - some of whom who will actually be punished as victims of domestic abuse. It shows the hypocrisy of the militant girl power advocates.

MEN'S HEALTH WEEK STARTS TODAY

The Men's Health Forum starts its annual Men's Health Week today and its the tenth anniversary of the campaign. The YOLO (You Only Live Once) campaign is aimed at:

• Men to think about the impact on their health of the decisions they make.
• Policy-makers locally and nationally, in government, local authorities and primary care to do exactly the same thing: to think about the impact on men's health of the decisions they make.
  
  At the moment health services often fail to do that with result that men are far less likely to access them than women.

The Men's Health Forum do a great job in highlighting issues and showing how men's health needs are ignored - but should they be more aggressive and be prepared to take the NHS and GP's to court about the lack of the support, information and access to healthcare for men. 

Go to your GP surgery - there'll be a rack of leaflets for women, teenagers, children, the elderly etc but nothing for men. Where is a big campaign to get GP surgeries to open after or on a Saturday morning therefore making them more accessible for men. The radical feminists are brilliant at running campaigns and getting their own way - the Men's Health Forum perhaps need to be like them and be more aggressive.

PROWESS 2.0 - PEDDLING MISANDRY

One of the uglier sides of 'girl power' is not female emancipation but the ugly twisted men-hating behaviour which is designed to show how superior women are over men. In employment terms this can also come together in a gang or 'pack' mentality where women form aggressive anti-male groups which more discriminatory as those men they allege are the cause of anything that gets in their way.

You cansee this at work where you have 'women-only' training courses, fast-streams and management courses - all discrimination against men.

Employment is a good example and as this site has regularly reported, women-only start up funds are discriminatory because a man is denied access to this capital solely because of his gender. And of course, if he has a wife/girlfriends, sister or daughter they are then discriminated against too - by their own sisterhood. There is now a Home office funded (through the laughably named 'Equalities Department' ) Women's Business Council.

In this vein I came across this form of misandry and anti-male 'pack' mentaility in its purest form.

Prowess 2.0 (Women in Business)  - the UK online centre for women in business. "It’s where you’ll find top-quality information and online resources for women who’re starting or growing businesses, plus links to women's business networks and  local business support."

 First example is a story by Erica Watson about the ten top tips for female entrepreneurs. The story starts with this anti-male, pro-women misandry, which has no factual basis at all:

"Women in business are more likely to succeed in getting grants than men are.  Lots of us have been brought up to be more careful about preparation.  Just think about school kids and homework: the girls tend to make the greater effort.  The good girl grounding is paying-off in more grants for women in business,  but even so, it is tougher than ever to get a business grant of any type."

Erica Watson pops up again with a piece on Feminomics -with her"short sharp Prezi turns the man-made economic crisis on its head.  How did macho values create the mess and what’s the feminomic alternative?"

That old feminist corker where there is no proof that the crisis is down to men - if they say the banking crash was a man made problem then the public sector deficits were a female made creation as it has led to the massive expansion in the public sector which is female dominated. Both are irrelevant and were nothing to do with gender.

When there are 1.5 million men and 1.1 unemployed women though - it is clear that Prowess 2.0 is a site prepared to make anti-male statements with no foundation - all in the name of equality and the sisterhood.

MEN ARE VICTIMS OF FORCED MARRIAGE TOO - GOVERNMENT AND MEDIA MUST NOT BE ALLOWED TO FORGET

The Home Office through its Forced Marriage Unit reports that there are around 10,000 forced marriages per year - 8,000 women and 2,000 men - 80%/20%. The BBC reported the situation about men a few years back.

Today it was pre-announced that this barbaric practice was to become illegal (previously it was only an issue in the civil courts, bizarrely) with a full announcement to be made tomorrow (Friday).

However, when you look at the reporting, suddenly those 2,000 men disappear. A clear case of discrimination by ommission against men.

The Press Association only mention 8,000 women which is hugely damaging because often local papers and others just copy and paste the Press Association story. Ed Thomas produces a BBC film  that just talks about women even though they previously ran a story about it as highlighted above. ITN do the same.

But is this omission driven by the government forgetting that male victioms exist (even though it is their own figures that state 20% of victims are men - page 26 of this report).The Daily Mail reports the Home Secretary is just stating 8,000 women - has she forgotten the other 2,000?

 Also tomorrow the Home Secretary is "expected to announce a £500,000 fund to help schools and other agencies know how to spot early signs of a forced marriage. A Government advertising campaign will also aim to highlight the right to choose who you marry." Will that just aimed at women and girls? Will these campaigns not mention men and boys?

Well let's wait and see what is said tomorrow but if the government follows the media lead then men who are forced into marriage will remain the second class victims in this issue. Ignored and swept under a carpet solely because of their gender - almost as if forced marriage is OK for men but not women?
