FEMALE VIOLENCE FIGURES UNDERMINE MYTH THAT ONLY MEN ARE VIOLENT

The terribly sad story last week of model Danielle Lloyd being attacked by two women at a nightclub  brings into light the latest British Crime Survey figures that also emerged that showed that one in four violent attacks involve women. Women alone amounted to 13% whilst violence perpetrated by men and women together was 11%.

The key issues show that this worrying rise can no longer be swept under the carpet and the blame for violence can no longer be construed as being solely perpetrated by men. There are of course no known female perpetrator programmes so this will also need to be looked at and the question why not? raised.

As argued on this site, some of this violence will also be occurring in domestic relationships so the myth that domestic violence only affects female as victims will also be laid be rest.

In addition, there is no word from the Minister for Women, The Fawcett Society or others about this trend. Is it because they don't want to face the facts?

WHO IS STILL PEDDLING THE DOMESTIC VIOLENCE MYTHS EXPOSED BY RADIO 4's MORE OR LESS?

A short post was published yesterday outlined how BBC Radio 4's More or Less programme destroyed/decimated the myth that has been used for over a decade that "Domestic violence kills more women between 15 and 44 than anything else."

As the programme outlined (hopefully a more permanent link) this was from a News at Ten feature that stated this as the bald truth and one in which other journalists and bodies such as the Government regularly trot out. A Frank Fisher asked the programme to investigate its veracity and lo and behold the Office of National Statistics and the chief statistician from the World Health Organisation disowned it.

The most telling parts are about 1min 45 in but also at the end where academic Sylvia Walby who produces the statistical analysis on domestic violence figures for the Government/Home Office and is gender neutral (she with others always use the 1 in 6 men and 1 in 4 women will be victims in their lifetime) was asked by Tim Harford, the presenter:-

TH: Some of the people that we've talked to in the course of doing this piece have suggested that we shouldn't be questioning this rogue statistic; even though we know it isn't true, we shouldn't be questioning it because we know domestic violence is such a serious problem. Do you have sympathy with that view?

SW: I understand the view. It is difficult to be critical of something on such an important area. But I think we've gone beyond the basics. Everybody now knows that domestic violence is a serious problem, and now we need to know exactly the scale and shape of that problem. So we do need to be querying the figures and we do need to be improving them. And that means collecting new and better data.

Listening to Sylvia on the programme you could tell (she makes a sigh) that she knows the figure is also not true and she is an expert in analysing the official statistics on the subject. So if the ONS, the WHO and Sylvia Walby do not support this figure, who does?

However, look again at Tim Harford's question.

What it shows is that Marxist anti-male feminists are using Orwellian Double-speak. They admit the figure is wrong but that does not mean that it should not be treated as fact and to challenge it puts you in the wrong, such is the PC Britain we live in.

So who are these people who told Tim Harford that the truth does not matter and that facts should not be questioned. It wasn't the Government because Tim would have said so (that would be story in itself), could it be either or both of the two leading charities that support female victims, or who else?

It is obviously people who have too much to lose to if the truth got out and someone who thrives on male-bashing (if it is the biggest killer, then those doing the killing are men)

As Big Brother would say YOU DECIDE.

 

ANOTHER ANTI-MALE MYTH DESTROYED: THIS TIME ON DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

Been busy last few days but did not want regular readers to miss the destruction of a myth used by the Government and others that says the most common cause of death of women between their 20's to 44 was through domestic violence. It is used as a means to scaremonger about how violent all us men are.

BRITISH MEP ISSUES DECLARATION OF SUPPORT FOR MALE VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

Liz Lynne, a British MEP for the West Midlands, placed a written declaration in the European Parliament wanting to make sure that cross-EU campaigns on domestic violence included male victims. It is basically the equivalent of an Early Day Motion in the House of Parliament where individual MP's can place a motion on a subject and ask others to sign up.

At least one British politician is taking it seriously, isn't about time someone did the same in the UK Parliament?

IRISH JOURNALIST KEVIN MYERS NEEDS OUR SUPPORT

Back in April, the site highlighted a very articulate article in Ireland's Independent newspaper by Kevin Myers. This article created a new term - lifeboat feminism.

He also has wrote this month an even more perceptive article about the silence from Irish women's domestic violence charities over a case involving a male victim. This of course is no different here, as can be seen the silence from organisation's like Women's Aid and Respect to the case raised by Ian McNicholl in The Sun last week (link). Women's Aid said The Sun's use of Government statistics was selective.

The issue is raised because Kevin has circulated an e-mail where he says:-

What this shows and in many ways to it reminiscent of how the current Government acts. If anyone has criticism, instead of looking at why they make criticism and whether it is legitimate, they instead personally criticise the critic and in some cases try to destroy them.

With so many vested interests and anti-male feminists who rely on public funding thinking they have such high status, anyone who threatens to undermine them or object to them is vilified and a witch hunt ensues. This type of Stalinist behaviour can be seen in Kevin's case.

He has had the balls to say what so many people think (male and female - just ask Erin Pizzey) and now he is a victim of hatred from people who we are supposed to think are nice.

Please write and support Kevin, we cannot afford for him to be a casualty in the war on men. 

 

WIDESPREAD COVERAGE OF MALE VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

Last week marked another landmark period of coverage on male victims following the burst of coverage earlier on this year (see March/Feb here).

Ian McNicholl came forward and reported the traumatic situation he found himself in which led to his ex-girlfirend being sent to prison for a lenient seven years.

The coverage was broken on the front page of Britain's biggest selling daily newspaper The Sun (1, 2, 3) and also featured an interview on BBC Look North. The case was also covered by This is Grimsby and the Yorkshire Post.

In addition, the Sunday Express had a large feature and there were features in Scotland's Herald newspaper (1, 2).

Lastly, and apologies for missing this, but Liz Lynne MEP also had an article in the Birmingham Post.

What this shows is that the media are still starting to take this issue seriously and see it as an area where equality is not present. If it newsworthy enough to be on the front page of The Sun then there is enough evidence to show that the Government can no longer with any credibility claim that it 'the vast majority of cases are against women'.

NUMBERS OF VIOLENT WOMEN SOAR - MUST BE A LINK TO DOMESTIC VIOLENCE?

The UK Government published figures this week that showed a total of 88,139 women and girls were arrested for violence against the person last year - the equivalent of 241 arrests a day.

It was up from 87,140 in 2006/07 and more than doubled the 37,100 arrested in 1999/00.

The story was covered in The Telegraph. This issue was covered on the site last year(link), and surely with this number of women being arrested for violence some of it will also be happening in the home. If some women get violent after drinking too much, why would this not happen in the home.

The reason for raising it is that any naysayers who say that men cannot be victims or are in such a minority that they are not worth bothering about, are wrong.

MESSAGE IS GETTING THROUGH TO COUNCILS ON HELPING MALE VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC ABUSE

Thank you to readers for sending through the stories in the Telegraph (link) and Observer (link) about UK council's using the Gender Equality Duty (link) to try to achieve refuge provision for male victims in their communities.

The complaints by Women's Aid on funding problems because they have to include men for the first time may seem rich to some but they make an important point.

Firstly, female victims do need support so the issue is that is it right to ask an organisation and its refuges to take in men or set up male services?

I would think not, it is better to have organisations in local communities specifically geared to helping men. This could include support and advice from current refuge providers such as Women's Aid but there is more to it than just putting a roof over a man's head, especially if children are involved. There has to be special care aimed at male victims who suffer additionally from the social unacceptance and lack of recognition.

In addition, council's need to make sure they provide specific informational campaigns for men and have specialist training in helping male victims.

As council's have neglected male victims in their communities for decades, it is a bit of sledgehammer to crack a nut to force a women's charity down this path. It would be better if the council's took a step back and assessed what they need to do to specifically meet the needs of male victims, either setting up their own organisations, asking housing association's to set up specific refuges for men (some already do) or asking other charities/organisations that already help male victims.

There is also a risk of igniting a  'gender war' (yes I know there is one already) by trying to take away services for female victims and giving them to male victims. No reasonable man wants to see services cut for women, what we need is extra funding and attention on helping male victims, who after all, account for 40% of the victims in the UK.

Setting this aside though, at least things are changing even if it still seems glacial.        

GOVERNMENT CONTINUES ITS CAMPAIGN OF IGNORING MALE VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC ABUSE

The UK Government announced (link) last week that it was introducing a further 18 specialist domestic violence courts into the UK.

However, as the court system is supposedly meant to be gender neutral, one would think that the Government's announcement would also be gender-neutral especially as two in every five victims, according to the Government's own figures (link), are male. Such naivety.

Firstly, spot the picture of a woman, no picture of a male victim.

Also note the comments by Home Office Minister Alan Campbell and Baroness Scotland, they are clearly only aimed at female victims.

Baroness Scotland says "'Improving the safety of women experiencing domestic violence and the support that they are given is a key priority for the government." It should say "improving the safety of women and men experiencing domestic violence."

Just another example of the ongoing bias of the present Government who continue to ignore male victims of domestic violence.
